This poem is my submission to a challenge to respond to another poet’s piece. She was writing about the challenge of responding to romantic advances by someone twenty years her junior. I responded with this piece from the youngster’s perspective. I think it came out pretty well. 🙂
Eternal love sings a melody in my heart when I see you smile.
You worry about the price I pay to cup your heart in my hands,
But you don’t understand
That I see eternity when I gaze into your eyes;
You leave me mesmerized!
I don’t see a difference when I gaze at you and me:
I see two hearts beating with same rhythm, same chords met
As we link lives in a shared journey to forever…
You worry that I will want someone my own age –
But all I see is someone who accepts me exactly as I am –
That means more to me than setting myself up on a stage
Of disappointment as they – though equal in years –
never figure out how to allay my fears and make me smile.
I have that in you.
I want to hold you at night, kiss you just right,
Make you remember what it feels to be young again…
I want to make you complete, more than between the sheets,
I want to commit to forever with you.
I want to spend my eternity making you smile every day.
Not having you worry that I will trade you in for a newer model
With fresh paint, greater horsepower and more curves.
You can be assured that I disdain the new for the classic;
I’m more at ease with you.
And don’t worry about us reproducing our love
In photocopies of our mutual connection…
We can always adopt
Or I can spend my entire life consumed with the pursuit
Of displaying my affection for you
Without the pitter patter of little feet.
Don’t worry anymore, my darling, my love…
I commit to you forever, I won’t ever stray…
My eyes and my heart are only for you, my love
So take my hand and let us walk into forever…
