Poetry Workshop Assignment – This Door

Back when I was doing the poetry workshop, we were assigned the task of writing a poem around the personification of an inanimate object. We had to imagine ourselves as this object.  Below is the gist of the assignment

Choose an object that you will become. What does the condensation of yourself into this object mean for your most precious human attributes.

Words, language, sexuality, relationships, human body parts & how do they function.  What condition is your heart in?

Do not allow your internal censor to stop you from creating something beautiful.

Write quickly & review for about 15 minutes.

This is what I came up with…

This Door

This wooden door winks cheekily through stained glass eyes,

At passers-by, giggling with rusty hinge when opened.

Arms at my sides, my glad hello wide

I creak my welcome, inviting you to enter.

Your hand on my handle makes me gurgle with bliss

As my movements give you permission, go in and out

At will, and as you depart, I swing shut

With the finality of regret.
