Poetry Workshop Assignment – Eulogy

Yet another piece created at our poetry workshop. This exercise was to create our own eulogy.  I never shared it with anyone before, but I do think it describes my life quite adequately.  I was trying to create a consistent rhythm, as well.  Hope it works 🙂 And hope you enjoy.

Life lit by divine’s burning flame

blazed bright, lighting pilgrim’s way,

revealing truth, dispelling shadows grey

with word and deed, extending helping

Life saved from death by miracle’s hand

We stand in awe at God’s command

Of circumstances, while at every turn

Faith bolstered strong made unseen

Life led with fervour and with grace

Released the shackled and disgraced

And fed the hungry, raised up the blind

And pointed all towards better

Life fraught with danger, and with tears

Betrayals, death and unspoken fears

Of abandonment made hurt soul fall

And cry alone behind closed walls

For protection.

Life finally released from prison cell

Soul sings and shouts and knows full well

That resurrection though free, brought at a price

Cannot be bought for all without sacrifice

Of one.

Life surrendered, back to the one

That gave it, so all ended battles won

For glory; as casket lowers to darkened earth

Rejoice, for life’s full cup dispersed

Till empty.
