Discrimination

The below piece was my response to a situation involving one of my friends and her son – they are of Rastafarian faith, but her son was refused entry to a private preschool because of his hair-style.  It has inflamed my circle of friends and has sent ripples through the nation, as newspapers took up the story.

You can read the stories here – The Bajan Reporter.  I will search for other newspaper articles and post them here as well.  Discrimination really is a ‘crime in the nation.’    Read the article, and then read the poem…

Discrimination

Dis-

….

Dis-

Crime-

….

Dis

Crime-

In-

Nation

…..

Dis-

Crime-

In-

Nation

flares

ugly head again

Stain of sin blood red

Spilling down society’s

skirts like menses

Hidden shame tenses

Locked, restricting fences

Stopped hopes:

high on hill’s top

Dashed to ground

Smashed sound of

Anger rising

Chastising another young lion

shaking mane in the wind

Constitutional rights unfringed

legally speaking,

Yet

Private rules stand rigid

Frigid excuses

Argument confuses

Lion cub refuses

to trim proud mane

Locs’ length disdained

by those constrained by prejudice

Young couple

wanting sun to shine

Resplendent

Refined

by knowledge

Cast off

Sudden eclipse

Sun still shines
