Poetry, serious poem

Christmas

This piece is another brain dump – I didn’t write anything specific for the Christmas season in spite of the myriad prompts across the Internet over the past week or so, but because I didn’t want to put up an old poem, I thought about those who, like myself, see Christmas cheer in a more sober light.  Those who lost someone dear via whatever means.  I hope that it helps those who read it to reach out to those who are hurting for whatever reason.  Written for Open Link Night at dVerse Poets Pub.  Enjoy -but let it make you think….

Christmas

Hard to hear of

Christmas cheer

without tears

dripping

nipping joy in the bud

no longer here

the close warmth of touch

of kiss

the bliss of

souls knitting lives

into work of art

No longer one

Torn apart

Hearts bleed

Left gaping need

to be filled again.

Hard to think of all the joy

this season should employ

Tears

Fears

wear down

ground smooth

ridges where two hearts connected

gone.

Together

Forever

Whatever

Not ever

again?

Pain drains

Christmas slices

dices heart like

meat lain on the plate

Consumed

Eaten

Beaten

Spent.

Christmas passed.

Breathing fast

slows

again.

  1. I always breathe a sigh of relief once this season heads out the door, and I think you’re right, many others do as well.

    • For sure. People lose loved ones for so many different reasons – I think this poem touches because it’s so universal…. Christmas is one of the most romantic seasons of all. Not having a partner sucks, whether you lose them through death, divorce or any other means.

  3. Bajanpoet, I hear you with this poem. So much ‘stuff’ surrounds Christmas. Not all of it happy. Your words ring so very true.

  5. Good that someone remembers Christmas is not always a time for cheer for many. Lost my mom around this time. And I have my own Marlye’s ghost to confront. Thank you for this!

  10. with all things two perspectives, including the ‘joyous time of year’. You bring this to light in a palpable way. really lovely expression to lend to what this time can bring as we sit in absence. My best to you this new year my friend, appreciate all your constant love and support. ~ Rose

  12. I love your expression ‘brain dump’. I REALLY liked that!

A good poem, I think many could relate. It’s sort of good when New Year kicks in and things go back to normal… for those who like normal!!
