Improv

This is one of two poems I wrote last year in December after going to an annual jazz concert that I try not to miss.  Jazz is my favourite genre of music, and any time I hear a saxophone I get all excited! Last year’s concert was awesome, as usual, and I was so buzzed that I came home and wrote two poems one after the other before I could relax my mind enough to fall asleep.  This is one of these poems.

Improv

(Inspired by Christmas Jazz 2011.12.17)

Play, jazzman, play,

spin notes round, sway

side to side with scatty

rhythms; let drums say

what they will, in

percussionist’s way –

Play, jazzman – play!

Sultry sax sends

shivers down swaying back

I sat, feet flat on floor

keeping time:

rocking waistline

Finger snaps

Claps

Spinning high-hats –

The tin-tin-ti-tin-tink

Transports me, links

soul to body on

musical plane …

Out of body experience

Soul rests as notes wane

Then picks up again…

Can’t help it! Up on my feet!

Notes sound too sweet

to sit still

The thrill makes body hover

Moving

Grooving

Even when it’s over –

Play, Jazzman, PLAY!

Play, jazzman, play,

spin notes round, sway

side to side with scatty

rhythms; let drums say

what they will, in

percussionist’s way –

Play, jazzman – play!

  6. I like some jazz okay, but there is some I just don’t care for. It’s certainly not my favorite genre of music. Yet your poems made me wish I was there. Peace, Linda

    • Well I’m glad you did wish u were there 🙂 It was awesome – and I’m not saying that just coz I’m a jazz lover… I mean hearing the guys improvise on Christmas classics like “Oh Holy Night” and “We Three Kings”! Man it was FREAKING AWESOME! Glad you liked the poems!

  8. oh i can def. relate to this…. i love all the instruments in jazz, bass, piano, drums, guitar.. but the brass instruments for me are those that carry the emotions of the player like none of the others does….

  9. This is so jazzy and that refrain “play jazzman play”… it clearly shows you know your jazz… very good… and I really like how you can’t sit still …

  10. I can understand why you need to ‘let out’ some of those emotions after listening to jazz – especially when it’s live and the whole audience is grooving. There’s something almost like primeval enchantment there, which no recording can quite match.

  15. My goodness – you certainly did it. You made music out of words – sounds, rhythms, rhymes. Made me want to dance too. Excellent work. So fine.
