This is the second poem I wrote inspired by Christmas Jazz 2011. If you are here for the first time, go here to read the first one. I was so buzzed that I had to get all my scatting out … I think it was only after I got the outline of this piece down that my Muse decided to release me and let me sleep…. Enjoy!
Ascension
(Inspired by Christmas Jazz concert Sat Dec 17, 2011)
Saxophone incantations ride drumroll rhythms,
Liberating minds – freeing souls from prison.
Soloist scats prayers, drawing energy from swaying crowd
whose loud chants mingle and increase
with every single note.
Percussion-Priest breaks bread at Feast of Soul,
Rolling waist pours wine, released to divine control.
Jazz Communion brings sacred union
between musician and eager congregation
No death at this altar, just altered state of consciousness
as souls become enlightened.
In lightened state, souls equate bliss with high-hat kissing
drummer’s stick,
Every lick bleeding out a beat so intoxicatingly sweet
It causes heartbeats to rise and crowd to close eyes
as one, and transcend time and space
Transported to another place
Where notes are breath and music is air
Where jazz is King, where chords collide
and all who hear
swear allegiance
To music….

I love jazz, and both these poems are fine tributes. Love the short lines and formatting of last week’s perhaps just a wee bit better, but maybe that’s just today… 😉

Yeah *whispering* Improv is my favourite too (Don’t tell Ascension!) LOL
Different feel this time, but that’s coz I wrote the outline while dropping off to sleep after the show and wrote/crafted the poem the day after. Improv was written pretty much word for word immediately after the show. I did the formatting of the page the next day.

You ride the crest of the music, which has inspired some great wordplay, double entendres, and backbeat metaphor!

Count Basie replied, when asked how he would describe his music, “Pat you foot.”
You have done more than that, for sure, with “Ascension”. Excellent! You earned your sleep from your muse quite well…
