This is the second poem I wrote inspired by Christmas Jazz 2011. If you are here for the first time, go here to read the first one. I was so buzzed that I had to get all my scatting out … I think it was only after I got the outline of this piece down that my Muse decided to release me and let me sleep…. Enjoy!
(Inspired by Christmas Jazz concert Sat Dec 17, 2011)
Saxophone incantations ride drumroll rhythms,
Liberating minds – freeing souls from prison.
Soloist scats prayers, drawing energy from swaying crowd
whose loud chants mingle and increase
with every single note.
Percussion-Priest breaks bread at Feast of Soul,
Rolling waist pours wine, released to divine control.
Jazz Communion brings sacred union
between musician and eager congregation
No death at this altar, just altered state of consciousness
as souls become enlightened.
In lightened state, souls equate bliss with high-hat kissing
Every lick bleeding out a beat so intoxicatingly sweet
It causes heartbeats to rise and crowd to close eyes
as one, and transcend time and space
Transported to another place
Where notes are breath and music is air
Where jazz is King, where chords collide
and all who hear
