Again?

I was on Facebook and Twitter late last night and I came upon a story of a 17 year old African American young man, Trayvon Martin, who was walking  around in his neighbourhood and was shot by the head of his neighbourhood watch.  It sickened me because it is yet another case of senseless killing.  I have linked to the stories below this poem.  (I’Akobi is the name of a young Barbadian man whose death has been deemed as ‘misadventure’ by the local court, but whose case has shown serious discrepancies.) This poem is simply a brain dump as a way of dealing with this news…. Please check the links below.

Again!

Again?
Again!
Another brother slain!
When will this disgusting refrain
This horrible stain against
humanity’s conscience wane?
Won’t it ever cease?
Will there ever be peace
when discrimination walks free
on a ‘self defense’ plea?
Will there ever be justice?
Or will we continue to just piss
on the notion of equality?
What the hell is wrong
with a world where as long as
you’re walking alone you’re a threat?
Subjected to abuse?
Could as well form the noose
and hang ourselves
Coz we have no shame
As we stand by
see another innocent die
and all we do is cry
All those we have lost –
What the hell is the cost
when we stand aside?
Locally and abroad
the stories abound
death’s sickle swings round
and young, strong wheat’s
harvested,
falling to the ground….
but not picked up.
I’Akobi, Troy Davis… now this little boy
well what’s the real ploy
when we constantly see
destruction without flinching
a modern day lynching
with gun instead of a rope
I’m losing hope
’cause all I can ask is….
“Again???????????”

  1. Well said. And spoken with authority. Damn it has happened again.

  4. This breaks my heart…the tragedy, your verse…it is good to feel so deeply about this, as a mother with a daughter to raise who wants to “be government of peace when I grow up” and has the strength and power for such a path…to share verse like this when she is ready…I’m sad for so many suffering by this one act. His life lost was a bridge for many to evolve, and so I must remember him with grace and dignity he deserves, and appreciate what your poem offers us in the next steps of our lives as choice-makers. Thank you for this gift…

    • It is a serious thing… I had other poem earlier – Search for “Discrimination” and “Innocence” – that dealt with the evil against each other. Passion is not only sexual!

I am glad that you will remember Trayvon, and I pray your daughter gets her wish to be an agent of peace!
