Package

Why is it that people always want the spoils without putting in the work? People always fall for the happy-ever-after myth, that after Prince Charming comes they just go straight off and live happily ever after… No one tells us that if Jazmin and Alladin had issues after they married, or what happened after Cinderella had babies. Nobody diagnosed Sleeping Beauty with sleep apnea which drove her husband insane with fear every time she had to drive the children to school…

And what about relationships? I’m sure you would always want the man to be the boss in the bedroom, know how to make you cum with just winking at you… and all the stuff you see on tv? The men want to be able to have a woman who is always clean, always ready always ready to suck dick at the drop of a hat…

The point is (this is supposed to be an introduction to a poem, not an essay in itself!) that people always want the finished package – and resent having to deal with their lover’s fears and misgivings – far less their inability to fit into your own expectations. It is unfair, because if I knew how to please my last lover, you are a completely different animal. She liked her hair pulled, but you hate being spanked. How am I supposed to know that???? Anyway, after this long intro.. please enjoy my musings on Packages.

PACKAGE
No one likes unfinished packages.
They like everything just so:
Neat bows that close
Around a perfect box
That locks the real me inside.
Wrapping paper in place;
Setting aside.
Waiting for the right one
To pick up the
Perfectly wrapped gift…
And swiftly
Unwrap it.

Well fuck it!

Who said I want to
be the one to teach
Preach
Reach the broken –
Touch the unspoken?

No one likes to
come alongside,
help build up –

It ain’t easy!
It’s back breaking work!

Construction
From inception
To completion
Takes commitment,
Patience,
False starts,
Some broken hearts
And the will to
Start again when
We hit a wall…

No one wants
An unfinished package….

But to the one
With the courage
To crack it –
The mystery
Of the broken me,
That is –
To that one is given
The honour
Of seeing me flourish
As I am nourished
With love’s irrigation,
As I plot life’s destination
To be my heart’s GPS;
My navigation
From shy to secure
In my own skin
Promising
The beauty of
Solidity
A firm foundation
To build a nation on.

Is that one
You?

  2. first, i like the intro…and how true on wanting the spoils but being unwilling to make the investment…in love and life….
i like in the verse as well for those willing to crack the mystery of you…that indeed takes investment to really take the time to understand one…and is def the foundation.

    • Thanks Brian …. I had to drop in a disclaimer that it’s supposed to be an intro and not an essay, coz I found myself going on and on … it is definitely a pet peeve of mine.

If you don’t crack the surface, you will never see the real person inside. If you are not willing to invest time, everybody loses.

  3. it seems to be very human to want the biggest output with minimal investment… it won’t work in the long term me thinks.. seeing that people are different and after all, it’s kinda adventurous to unwrap that uneven packages, they’re often those with the most valuable content..smiles

  6. Honest sentiment, and I liked the intro too. Many people are afraid to commit and dig in deeper or really get to know someone.

    unopened bow—
    lovely on its own,
    but inside, who knows?

  7. Great read.. wonder why striving for a perfection that is only the outside package is so important? the interesting is never the package but the content.. we learn that as children but then forget it… love that image. And I agree with your analyzis…

    • Thanks so much Bjorn … I always wonder why the outside is seen as so much more important than the inside… Agreed, we do learn that as children – watch a child rip off the package to get at the toy inside…. but then as adults we are so into appearances its sickening….

  9. Really this poem poses important and serious questions. but O, how I laughed at some of your words in intro…wondered myself if Snow White was suffering from incipient nymphomania…what w. her seven dwarfs…at any rate, sometimes these unopened packages turn out to be a Pandora’s box…and out flies things we find difficult to handle. This is a provocative write…and well executed. xo

    • Thank u so much Jackie! It is one of the poems that I sat on for a while because the emotions I was writing from were so raw. LOL @ Snow White and nymphomania…; but I have seen naughty Internet memes that suggested that …. hehe …
