Author Spotlight: Jenavia Powell

What can I say about this next entrant to my Author Spotlight series? Jenavia Powell snuck up on me after I was introduced to her poetry via our mutual friend Tam Avery. Being a slut for awesome words, I started stalking her page and anywhere else I could find her.  I introduced her to my #EroticEmpire FB group and I’ve enjoyed having her as a great friend.  Now I’m seeing her work on a great looking website. To get to see her books go here:  SHADES OF MY LIPSTICK and UNTAMED!

Let’s get to know Jenavia!

Jenavia

Tell us a little about yourself. Who is Jenavia Powell?
Jenavia Powell is a poet from the Midwest. Born in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Huge fan of music and art and literature.

What got you into writing?
Writing saved my life. I remember one day as a kid, I got into some trouble and I remember being afraid of leaving the house. So I turned the tv on and saw a movie called, “Poetic Justice”. One of the poems that was being recited in the film, I immediately recognized it was by Maya Angelou. My mother noticed me copying the words on a piece of paper. She gave me a note book and pen and said, “Write your own words”. Ever since, I’ve kept a note book and pen by my side.

What inspires you?
Love, life, pain, sex, people.

What makes you think, “I have to write about that!”
I feel like everything and everyone has a story. Including myself. I sometimes sit and observe what’s around me, from taste to smell. And an idea would just hit me all of a sudden.

Is poetry your main focus?

Yes. however, I would like to write other things as well, but poetry is my first love.

Do you write other genres? I try.
What is your writing primarily about? LIFE, and love and all of what’s in between.

As a young author, what is your most and least favorite part of this business?

My favorite part is reaching out to people who may need to hear or read a message in my work that hits home for them. My least favorite is critical critics. Those whom are harsh when it comes to comments on my work.

Could you give us a snippet of one of your favorite pieces of work?

This piece is from my first poetry book, “Shades of My Lipstick.”

“Scars”
You can’t judge me
by my
cover

Just because
you don’t see scars
on the outside
of me
doesn’t mean
they’re not
there….

They’re everywhere.
I just know how to
hide them
well.
Paint on my face to hide
expressions
that could tell stories
soak in bubble baths full of musk oils
to remove the scent of
suffering
Managing A smile from a clenching jaw
so i don’t blurt out
truths
of what’s really going on.
Wear bright
colored clothes
to hide the baggage
I sometimes carry
upon my shoulders
and my back
Walking with my head held high
with an aching neck
from hanging my head low
to the floor
behind closed doors

so
you can’t judge me
by my
cover

Just because
you don’t see scars
on the outside
of me
doesn’t mean
they’re not
there….
They’re everywhere.
I just know how to
hide them
well.
