Books, Info, Make It Raine

Major Announcement: RAINE is ready! But…

Now, guys …. bear with me …

I have been gushing about this novel for nearly a year. The book is done, the editing is done, and now I have the cover. It’s ready to be uploaded to Amazon.

There is a literary competition in Barbados honoring one of our literary greats. Frank Collymore is synonymous in my country for writing and was a great influencer of some of our greatest literary minds. There is a competition in his name that I have finished everything in time to enter RAINE. I have been battling with it because I REALLY want this book in your hands. But the first prize in the Frank Collymore Literary Endowment competition is enough money to be able to comfortably publish the novel. And what I need – more than anything else – is money to publish.

According to the website for the competition, the aims of the competition are as follows:

The Frank Collymore Literary Endowment has been established to assist in promoting the literary arts in Barbados.

A Committee exists to identify what contribution the Endowment can most usefully make to the literary life of the island, to administer the annual Frank Collymore Literary Award and to read and judge the entries. The Committee consists of individuals in fields ranging from education to entertainment to journalism, and includes practising writers and literary critics. They have been selected not only on the basis of their commitment to the ideals set by Collymore, but also for their ability to look forward and to respond to a changing social climate. The Committee recognises that writing is one of the most important ways in which a people represents itself, to itself and to the world at large. In time, the writing being produced now may come to be seen as significant as that of the pre-Independence era. The Committee sees assisting in the emergence of a new generation of writers for the 21st century as an essential aspect of its role.

To accomplish this aim, the Committee’s first duty is to set high standards in the judging process, while recognising that unpublished work will not have had the benefit of feedback from many readers. Part of the Committee’s task, therefore, is to recognise and encourage potential, while evaluating and rewarding work which could hold its own in any literary arena. It is hoped that by entering for the award, writers, even if they do not win prizes immediately, will be encouraged to persevere, to acquire new skills, to learn and to try again. It is in this spirit of constructive competition that writers are invited to submit their work in one or more of the categories. Winners receive cash prizes and are expected to put their work forward for publication.

I have done the requisite three copies of the manuscript and I have written up the entry form. I am nervous, I am excited because I know that RAINE is good enough to win, I am fearful because I hope that people do not get mad at me for not releasing this novel at this time.. and I am, like any other entrant, hopeful that I get a winning nod from the judges. What I want to do is to beg my Empire’s indulgence while I enter this competition. I believe very strongly about my chances of winning, and also know the power of marketing – I fully intend to hit the Amazon market with the words “award winning novel” once the results are back.

In the meantime I have started RAINE’s sequel and will tease you with a couple snippets of the new novel, first to keep me motivated and second to keep you, my supporters, excited about the entire journey.

Thank you once again for being here with me. It means so much.

Always and in ALL WAYS…

PS – What I will do is big up my graphic artist Tracy DeOlivere Greenidge, of DeOlivere’s Originals Barbados. He did the graphic art, designed the entire book cover and even did the headshot for the back of the book. Although I am going to send the manuscript to the Frank Collymore Literary Endowment competition, I will publicly endorse his work and display what the book is going to look like when it finally is done.

I give you – MAKE IT RAINE’s official cover!
