This poem was inspired by listening to some pumping jazz – especially a musical conversation between a violin and a saxophone … Big ups to Naniki Jazz Safari for an awesome weekend! For those who are not Barbadian – the title of this piece is a nod to the location for this particular day’s event – Ilaro Court, the official residence of our Prime Minister. (Like the FB page here and see what was going on from Thursday to Monday!)
(Also will enter this into Dverse Poetry Pub for Open Link Night at 3 EST – Check it out!)
Ilaro
Bum-bum-badum-
badum-bum-bum
Bum-bum-badum-
badum-bum-bum
Rhythmic ripples
Air wrinkles
Atmosphere clear
for lift off
Music:
Magic carpet
floating through the ear
Cares
Slipping
away
I look down
Problems still bound
To land; ground
Their permanent home –
But, me?
I’m
on musical ecstasy …
So high it should be illegal
Hitting it hard
Every note
sends me higher –
I’ll soon surpass my frequent flier
Miles
All smiles
While grooving to
another
saxy spliff
Taking another whiff
Of scatting
Speaking
Sax
and Violin
Conversing
I’m all in
Tears
As music enthralls me
And jazz calls me
towards the highest peak.
“But, me?
I’m
on musical ecstasy …”
Now THAT s my kind of dope! Sweet, sweet write my friend. My head was nodded at the “Bum-bum-badum-
badum-bum-bum” !

I’m not a big fan of jazz, though I do love a good saxophone. But still I loved this poem because I could relate to being at a concert and having the music lift me above all my problems, leaving them bound to the ground as I soar with the music. Peace, Linda

I’d love to hear you read this – the Bajan accent is one of my fondest memories from my early days of working in the BBC West Indian Service. And we had some good jam sessions then, too, 60 years ago!

I will figure out how to record it using Soundcloud. 60 years … damn… 😀 Thanks for the compliments 🙂 I love my accent – and so does my wife 🙂 She’s from Boston, and loves when I speak lol
