Stability

I was talking on Skype and had an awesome metaphor hit me full on … I immediately started writing this poem.  Who else feels that love is a gyroscope that keeps one stable?

Stability

Orientation maintained

Momentum sustained

Unaffected by whispered refrains

by lips with jealous stains

on teeth

Acidic gossip attempts to eat

 away at resolve’s enamel

but the lies bequeathed

to itching ears fail to alter

focused course

Whispers lashing

Ground teeth gnashing

as one sails forward unaffected

Nothing knocks us to the ground

for we are protected all around

by love’s gyroscope.

A gyroscope keeps its rotation axis constant. ...

A gyroscope keeps its rotation axis constant. Therefore, angles measured in this frame are equivalent to angles measured in the lab frame (Photo credit: Wikipedia)

  4. Now if this isn’t totally brilliant, I don’t know what is.
Love the idea, love the way you lined it up for us and loved your choice of image.
Can’t take my eye off any of this.

  6. fascinating metaphor and very well written poem… I guess..if love is at the centre of the gyroscope- it is solid…sometimes surrounded by rapid movement and change…but always solid….or..maybe love is the chaos that holds us all of the chaos together…stops everything from spinning out of control…great concept…totally got me thinking…those first 3 lines are sweet as….so good

  13. You’re really growing as a poet Robert…think you’re finally getting ‘it’ – distillation, imagery, efficiency, lack of masturbation…. Well done mate. Keep at it.

  15. So well expressed! And I so agree….love protects…not only love for someone else but healthy self love and confidence. Bravo!

  16. It is a great metaphor! A small piece of me wishes there was one more line so that when “gyroscope” hits at the end, it would have rhymed with something before it, just to carry on with the great flow you had throughout. But I know that an unrhymed end makes for good emphasis too.

  19. Great metaphor fir love, which I do believe keeps me up when the world wants to knock me off my feet. The chinese language has an interesting character called the wobbling pivot, which kind of means the same thing that you describe in your piem, though it does not refer to only love.

  20. This is indeed a great metaphor. Wise thoughts, too, about how we can undo ourselves and others by our words…a constant struggle.

  21. Cool metaphor – love the stabilizing gyroscope – certainly in a lifetime of love there is a lot of spinning and a lot of changing. Children move the center, and age changes and slows the rotation!
